Checklist before the baby arrives

Checklist, the child's sleeping area:

  • Baby bed or cradle, possibly a bedside crib
  • Mattress and bed linen
  • A couple of blankets or duvets
  • Possibly a thin sleeping bag
  • A stable changing table (can also be placed in the bathroom)

Checklist, clothes and nappies:

  • Bodysuits, kicks, trousers and jumpers
  • Socks and hats
  • Nappies (disposable or cloth nappies) and baby wipes
  • Gulp cloths (several pieces)

Care and hygiene items:

  • Bathtub or bathtub
  • Soft washcloths and towels
  • Baby oil or baby cream
  • Diaper bucket and/or diaper bags
  • Grooming mat

Food and feeding:

  • Nursing pillow
  • Bottles and pacifiers
  • Breast pump (if you plan to breastfeed)
  • Milk bottles and sterilization equipment (if you plan to give formula + pumped milk)
  • Possible nursing pads or breast compresses
  • Cream for sore nipples (e.g. Purelan)

  • Car seat that is correctly installed in the car
  • Pram
  • Baby carrier (genius when you need to use your arms for something else. Many babies also find peace in the dark, close to the caregiver. It's a good idea to get the baby used to it early)
  • Baby carrier

  • Safety gates at stairs or dangerous areas (not the first few weeks, but suddenly the movements are greater)
  • Socket protectors (a little later, but nice to have in the house)
  • Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers
  • Babycall (traditional) or baby monitor (advanced) to be able to keep an eye on the baby when you are in another room

Health and well being:

  • Contact information for the child's doctor and health centre
  • Fever thermometer (more accurate measurement than what is included in the baby monitor, BabySensor )
  • Baby care products such as mild soap, shampoo and lotion
  • First aid kit, including bandages, scissors and antiseptic

Entertainment and stimulation:

  • Baby toys (rattles, teethers, soft teddy bears)
  • Baby gym or play mat

Other things to consider:

  • Baby books
  • Music box
  • A camera or camcorder to capture special moments
  • Diaper bag or changing bag for what you need when you are away from home
  • Night light (nice to have if you need to change a nappy, or if the baby has lost its sleep during the night. Some have their own night light, others are included in the baby call, e.g. BabySensor)
  • Babynest (can be good for daytime sleeping near carers)
  • Swaddle blanket/swaddle bag (Piece of cloth to "wrap the baby", like a burrito. Some find it safe)
  • Whitenoise (Some have their own device or app for sleep-inducing sound, others are included in the baby call, e.g. BabySensor )

Remember that this is a general checklist, and you can adapt it based on your own wishes and needs. You may also want to talk to other parents or health professionals for further advice and recommendations. Good luck with your preparations for the baby's arrival!
